2025 Wrap Up
Save Valley Conservancy and Niassa Mozambique
What a year 2025 has been for the Humani and Roger Whittall Safaris community. As we wrap up another year we find ourselves reflecting on all the years of operating in some of Africa’s most iconic wilderness areas, and one of our most successful safari seasons to date. This year brought exceptional sightings, unforgettable stories, an unwavering commitment from our team, and milestones that extended far beyond the safari itself.
On Humani, we have had an incredible season. With three lion hunts, seven leopard hunts, and 20 buffalo hunts over 2025, we have met some incredible people, and welcomed back old friends. We want to thank everyone who made this year possible. To all our clients who visited, you have made conservation in our area attainable and without you none of this would be possible!
To all the PH’s we worked with over the year, you have been amazing and contributed a wealth of knowledge, effort and expertise to our community and conservation here on Humani. Thank you for your contribution to our 2025 year, and we look forward to seeing you again in the near future!
As we witness the land transforming from the dry, wintery wilderness many of you would have experienced over the safari season, to the green and lush bush we love, we look forward to 2026 and the adventures we will have on safari.
The mopane leaves are turning green, and the grass we thought had died peaks through the ground once more, we are reminded of new beginnings, and look forward to a 2026 on Humani with hope.
Across Roger Whittall Safaris, Humani and Messalo in Mozambique, 2025 proved just how remarkable consistent dedication can be when paired with the right people and the right conditions. From the start of the season through to the final day, game numbers were strong and the hunting consistent. We were especially proud to see:
Over 200 days of hunting in 2025.
114 poachers apprehended.
Zero failed leopard hunts this year.
680+ wire snares removed.
Incredible conservation developments in Messalo and the land is transformed into a safari area once more.
With these results, we can confidently say 2025 will go down as a memorable, smooth, and rewarding safari season. Every successful hunt reflected not only strong client preparation, but the experience and instinct of our professional hunters and guides on the ground.
A season like this serves as a reminder that the pursuit isn’t only about success on paper, it’s about being adaptable, prepared, skilled, and able to read the details no matter how unpredictable the trail becomes. And this year, our team did that effortlessly.

In November of this year, we had our first exploratory buffalo hunt in Messalo, our Mozambique concession in Niassa. Messalo is now a registered Coutada and safari area, and over the past 16 months our team in Mozambique has been working around the clock, preparing the area for safaris and transforming anti-poaching in the area like never before.
There have been significant improvements in our anit-poaching in the area, and incredible support from the new leadership in Mozambique. This has been amazing for our conservation efforts, and we are so excited to see what the future holds for the area. You can read more on these efforts later on.
The new camp in Messalo is under construction, with only one chalet left to complete. The wilderness around the camp is absolutely stunning and with the open plan design and big windows, you feel immersed in the bush, making your experience in this wild area one to remember.
We are offering spectacular specialised combination hunts in Messalo of lion, leopard, multiple buffalo, sable, both the Niassa and Lichtenstein's Wildebeest, reedbuck, bushbuck, and more. If this is something you're interested in, fill in our contact form above.
Mozambique is under new leadership, who are taking environmental issues very seriously and are being proactive in protecting wildlife and supporting conservation efforts. We are so excited for the future of this concession and welcome any clients for an adventure with us in truly wild Mozambique.
In the Delta, we continue to sell safaris in Courtada 14. For those looking for multiple buffalo, sable, nyala, and small species like suni, red and blue duiker, oribi, and THE house of big hogs, this one is for you! Get in touch asap.

A Landmark Hunting Season
A Landmark Hunting Season
Messalo, Niassa in Mozambique
Impact Initiatives: Conservation and Community Partnerships That Matter
This year, our conservation and community initiatives moved forward with measurable results that are already being felt on the ground.
Our Anti‑Poaching Unit continued their essential work throughout the season — reinforcing our commitment to protecting wildlife, supporting law enforcement, and maintaining strong reporting partnerships with local communities. Here’s some interesting stats from the 2025 anti-poaching year:
Over 680 snares were removed.
114 total arrests, actionable and interventions.enture with us in truly wild Mozambique.
Anti-Poaching
Another major achievement for the Humani anti-poaching team was the successful detention and apprehension of numerous significant meat poachers with a history of repeated offenses. After our Anti-Poaching manager, Jaasiel, joined Roger’s team in March this year, we saw more hands-on action and responses to poaching reports, and, along with the K9’s, Eva and Chikara, our anti-poaching unit grew in strength and efficiency. This was all made possible through strengthened ground patrols and rapid response efforts from Roger, Jaasiel and the team.
In Messalo, our anti-poaching efforts have been phenomenal. They have put in the hard yards and managed to clear the area of dangerous wire snares, whip snares and a few gin traps.

Messalo is now a registered Coutada/safari area. With this, all illegal logging companies are no longer allowed into the Coutada as they pose a serious deforestation threat and habitat destruction for our wildlife. Now, no further logging licences can be issued in the Coutada and extra efforts in monitoring our area is essential. In addition, another big win is that no fishing licenses can be issued into the Coutada either, meaning our water life has a greater chance at flourishing.
We are so excited to see where this leads us and our wildlife and welcome anyone to our safari home in Niassa for an exciting safari in truly wild Mozambique!
Irrigation Scheme

In addition to conservation, our irrigation project is now active and supporting the Gudo community. With over 2000 people benefitting from the scheme, the community has the means to start producing their own crops for subsistence farming. Any left over crops can be sold for additional household income. This is a major solution to problems the community faces: lack of income, lack of food, and lack of independence and agency over their lives and stability.
It is our hope that with the irrigation scheme, the community will be empowered to produce their own food and earn an income, and will, therefore, not need to resort to poaching for survival. We are hoping to see increased levels of education and decreased subsistence poaching, as we recognise that we have the power to help and educate surrounding communities and further protect our wildlife.
The scheme has been running for just over a year now, and has impacted thousands of lives. The primary crops being grown are tomatoes, sorghum, maize, collared greens, and other crops that are part of the local stable diet. Humani permanently employs people to run the irrigation and generator for the community, as well as maintain and service the equipment for smooth usage. In addition, the community works with a local Agritek official who helps guide them in growing the right crops in the right seasons.
We are excited to continue working with the Gudo community and envision expanding the irrigation scheme to reach more people in the community in the following years. These initiatives represent the kind of impact partnerships we are committed to supporting long-term: structured, active, practical, and improving lives through access, stability, and collaboration.
Volunteer Programme: Conservation Through Hands-On Involvement
This year our partnership with AfricaGap saw an incredible impact on the lives of the young adults who came to volunteer on Humani. We would first and foremost like to acknowledge and pay our respects to Clara, a young, vibrant and joyful character who was part of the volunteer programme and who unfortunately passed away earlier in the year.
Clara was an incredible young woman. We remember her and honour her on Humani as her legacy lives on in the quiet moments of a bush sunset, and the bird song of Humani dawn. In her honour we have named our campsites ‘Clara’s Campsites’ and pay tribute to her.

We had an awesome year with the ‘vollies’ as they helped us with the general maintenance of the ranch, got to experience real and wild Africa, and loved visits from Rocky the rhino! We continue to be proud of how this programme connects people to conservation work in its most authentic form: practical, team-based, hands-on, and meaningful.
We want to thank AfricaGap and the guides who came down to help us manage the volunteers and ensure they had a good, productive, and life changing time on Humani. Your hard work has paid off and the impact you have had on our vollies’ lives is inspiring.
Check out this incredible video to find out more about the volunteer programme we are apart of:

Humani Game Count
At the beginning of November, Humani had our very own game count! With 80 like-minded volunteers coming down to the ranch, we had an awesome three days. Although the rain threatened to dampen our spirits, a good time was still had, animals were counted, and amazing bird lists were marked!

Over 2000 animals and 213 bird species were seen in just the 24 hours of the count. On the last night, we all congregated for a big hearty meal and to swap stories and banter. We have had really great feedback on the count, and look forward to hosting more in the future! Planning for next year's count is in the works, which will hopefully be more dry and not held over the full moon! Dates to be confirmed.

A Tribute to Peter Wood
It is with pride and thankfulness that we get to congratulate our very own Peter Wood for winning Professional Hunter of the Year for 2025. Peter started his hunter’s journey as an apprentice at Roger Whittall Safaris in 1994 under Roger’s regime, and in 1998 he passed his proficiency and started his career as a fully qualified professional hunter.

This award is a world-renowned award as being a Zimbabwean professional hunter is one of the hardest qualifications to achieve, requiring a minimum of 4 years of back breaking apprenticeship work, extensive bush knowledge, and expert guiding skills just to qualify. To win this award is truly incredible, so well done Pete!
Thank you, Pete, for being such a cornerstone of our family, our seasons, and our legacy. Your passion and free spirit still inspire the team, our staff love you, our guests respect you, and Humani will always be home. We are endlessly proud to continue working alongside you and celebrating this award with you.
2026 at Roger Whittall Safaris
Safari Season
With our 2026 season almost booked out, we are expecting some exciting adventures for next year! We look forward to our returning friends and new clients coming down for their safaris, and welcome them with open arms!
Our Roger Whittall Safari booth will be up and active at the safaris shows, 3145 SCI in Nashville Tennessee, so be sure to visit and meet Hannah to get to know us more and find out more about Roger Whittall Safaris! Get your bookings in because they’re filling up fast!
Irrigation Scheme
We are hoping to expand our irrigation scheme in 2026/2027 to reach more families in the Gudo community by purchasing another pump and generator. We are in communication with Chief Gudo and are discussing the best ways to implement growth and improvements that best fit his community’s needs.
Mozambique
With our campsite almost completed, we are looking forward to welcoming more clients down to Mozambique. Our anti-poaching efforts will continue with increased patrols and monitoring for illegal logging companies and illegal fishing.
We are also working towards securing another concession in Mozambique to further expand our Roger Whittall Safaris network, which is a very exciting development. Mozambique is truly beautiful, wild and untamed, and exploring these areas is going to be a major highlight for 2026.
Fencing Our Boundaries
To protect our wildlife and safeguard our remaining trees, we urgently need to install a secure conservation fence around our eastern and southern boundaries. This barrier will help reduce human–wildlife conflict, deter poaching, and prevent further habitat destruction. It will also protect surrounding communities and their crops from elephants, buffalo, and other dangerous game that wander out of their protected areas.
In total, we are needing to raise USD$500,000 for the 50km of fencing required and are reaching out to friends and clients from both the hunting and photographic communities to join together in supporting this effort. Your experience, passion, and commitment to nature can help ensure these landscapes remain thriving for future generations.
Should you wish to get involved in any way, please send a message to Hannah on rogerwhittallsafaris@zol.co.zw, or fill in our enquiry/contact form to get in touch.
Humani Events
In 2026 we will be planning and hosting a golf day in Harare along with an auction to raise funds for our anti-poaching and fencing initiatives. In the past, these have been highlight events for the Save Valley Conservancy, raising funds for the anti-poaching teams, and creating a fun environment where people can get actively involved in our initiatives. But the 2026 golf day is our first Humani golf day being hosted as a fundraiser for our ranch's initiatives.
Be sure to get involved this year for an awesome social. And no matter what level of golf (or badza) you play, how old or young you are, or if you have a handicap of 100, you stand a chance at winning something exciting and kickstarting your golfing career! If you are not much of a golfer, the auction will be to your taste with a variety of goodies on auction.

Final Thanks
From the entire Roger Whittall Safaris community — thank you to every guide, hunter, tracker, workshop hero, camp caretaker, partner, volunteer, and guest who made 2025 what it was. Your skills, passion and belief in our work continue to shape not only successful seasons, but a legacy of conservation through practical action, teamwork, and community partnership.
Here’s to 2026! Another year of unforgettable adventure, exceptional game, conservation impact, and stronger milestones yet to come. Let’s keep tracking together.
Wishing you a very happy festive season.
Keep the dream alive!

Irrigation Scheme
We are excited to continue working with the Gudo community and envision expanding the irrigation scheme to reach more people in the community in the following years. These initiatives represent the kind of impact partnerships we are committed to supporting long-term: structured, active, practical, and improving lives through access, stability, and collaboration.

At the beginning of November, Humani had our very own game count! With 80 like-minded volunteers coming down to the ranch, we had an awesome three days. Although the rain threatened to dampen our spirits, a good time was still had, animals were counted, and amazing bird lists were marked!
Humani Game Count
Over 2000 animals and 213 bird species were seen in just the 24 hours of the count. On the last night, we all congregated for a big hearty meal and to swap stories and banter. We have had really great feedback on the count, and look forward to hosting more in the future! Planning for next year's count is in the works, which will hopefully be more dry and not held over the full moon! Dates to be confirmed.
A Tribute to Peter Wood

Irrigation Scheme
Mozambique
We are hoping to expand our irrigation scheme in 2026/2027 to reach more families in the Gudo community by purchasing another pump and generator. We are in communication with Chief Gudo and are discussing the best ways to implement growth and improvements that best fit his community’s needs.
Hannah and Guy Whittal, and the whole Whittall and Humani families, December 2025
