Hunting For Conservation

Hunting For Conservation

Save Valley Conservancy, July 2025

A safari with Roger Whittall Safaris is more than just a hunt. I personally felt privileged to spend time with the Whittall family and learn about their century long journey as deeply caring stewards of their habitat. The diversity of game is a direct result of the Whittall’s dedication to their property known as Humani.

I personally felt privileged to spend time with the Whittall family and learn about their century long journey as deeply caring stewards of their habitat. The diversity of game is a direct result of the Whittall’s dedication to their property known as Humani.

I successfully harvested three of the big five. My leopard was a massive trophy that all PH’s in camp raved about the quality of the trophy. My elephant was a big bodied bull with 50lbs thick tusks - again all PH’s were impressed with the quality of the bull. As for my two buffalos, they were taken on my last morning hunting. We were fortunate enough to shoot a brace of buffalo together - two old dagga boys. A fantastic way to end my safaris.

While the big five trophies will always be memorable, I would be remised if I did not comment on my klispringer. Again, Guy did a masterful job guiding me where to look and to be patient for the klipsringer to climb, stop and turn for the shot - all perfectly choreographed.

One of the many highlights of my time at Humani was a sundowner with Roger, Ann, and Guy Whittall along with their long time PH’s Peter Wood and Butch Coaton among other family members. A real family affair where my hunting partner and I enjoyed wonderful stories and conversation with living legends of the still evolving conservation story.

I had the great fortune of having Guy Whittall as my PH. Our game drives were a a mix of Humani history intertwined with family history and of course lots of hard work setting baits for leopard and stalking for elephants and buffalo. My hunt at Humani was the most successful and spectacular of my thirteen African safaris. I saw all big five animals, of which the black and white rhinos and elephants were introduced by Roger Whittall decades ago.

Humani’s diversity of habitat ensures an equally diverse range of game. You will hunt river beds, river roads, palm forests, classic African bush and kopji hills. The spiral horn antelope are a real treat to watch on a daily basis. One of the best game watching spots was the camp itself perched up high above the Turgwe River. On a daily basis we would see Nyala, Kudu, Bushbuck, eland, waterbuck, elephants, baboons, and vast array of birds come to drink. When I next return to Humani I will spend more time on the Turgwe and Save rivers hunting spiral horns.

The camp was one of the nicest I have stayed in Africa. Not only is the river view unique and spectacular, but my chalet was large and comfortable. The common lodge was where we ate our meals, had drinks and enjoyed engaging conversation. The lodge was comfortable and the food was amazing. Sadly, despite all my daily exercise from hard stalks, I did not lose any weight - the cook does an incredible job with all meals. The staff, many of whom, grew up on Humani take great pride in their work and within a few days they knew me and my personal routines which they kindly catered to.

I heartily recommend Roger Whittall Safaris for a memorable hunt whether it be for big five, spiral horns or members of the tiny ten. No outfitter cares for their habitat more so than the Whittall family and you will feel their pride and learn their family history while on safari. I am sure to return one day.
