Irrigation For The Gudo Community

Irrigation For The Gudo Community

Providing Water For Subsistence Farming And Community Upliftment.

One of our most impactful community initiatives is the irrigation scheme we established for the Gudo community in 2023, home to around 60 families and approximately 500 people. With support from revenue generated by our safaris, and in particular hunters’ dollars, we built and donated a pump irrigation system that carries water more than four kilometers, powered by a generator we continue to fuel and maintain. Along with the infrastructure, we work with an AgriTech officer who provides training, education, and an employed operator to ensure the system runs smoothly.

Today, the community is able to grow a variety of crops: from tomatoes, spinach, and maize to sorghum, millet, and sunflower, not only feeding themselves but also generating income from the sale of surplus produce. The goal of this project is to increase access to food and income, improve health, hygiene, and education opportunities, giving families greater security and agency over their livelihoods.

The scheme is about more than just farming: it is also a key part of our conservation strategy. By providing reliable access to food and an alternative income stream, the need to turn to poaching or deforestation is significantly reduced. With greater resilience and opportunity, families are less likely to rely on bushmeat sales or woodcutting, directly easing pressures on wildlife and their habitats.

For us, the goal is not only to donate but to equip and empower, stepping in for maintenance and support where needed. What began a year and a half ago has already created real change, and we are working towards expanding the scheme so that even more people can benefit from its impact — a collaboration that supports both people and wildlife for the long term.
