Humani Anti-Poaching

Managing Human Wildlife Conflict For Conservation

Protecting wildlife through our anti-poaching units remains one of the most critical aspects of our conservation work. Our dedicated unit works daily to safeguard the wildlife on Humani Ranch. With the help of highly trained game scouts, community intelligence, and our two Belgian Malinois K9s, Chikara and Eva, we actively patrol, track, and respond to poaching threats. These efforts not only protect rhino and other key species but also play a vital role in reducing human–wildlife conflict by discouraging illegal hunting for bushmeat in nearby communities.

From painting signs and helping with campsite maintenance to visiting the Humani School to interact with the children, volunteers contribute in simple but meaningful ways. Their time here is balanced with adventure: guided game drives, sundowners at scenic spots, and even the chance to meet Rocky the rhino offer them a true safari experience while learning about life in rural Zimbabwe.

For the volunteers, the programme is a chance to step into a completely different way of life, gaining first-hand exposure to conservation, wildlife, and community in Africa. They form friendships with one another, meet local people, and leave with memories that often last a lifetime.

They form friendships with one another, meet local people, and leave with memories that often last a lifetime. For our community, the benefits are felt in small but significant ways — from a freshly painted classroom to an afternoon of football with the children.

While poaching cannot be eradicated entirely, the consistent efforts of our team have made a significant impact in reducing and managing the threat. Snares are removed on a weekly basis, poachers are regularly apprehended and handed over to authorities, and wildlife populations remain healthy and thriving as a result. The involvement of local communities—whether through employment as scouts and trackers or by sharing intelligence—has been vital in building trust and creating alternatives to poaching. Anti-poaching is not just law enforcement; it is about ensuring balance between people and wildlife, addressing the pressures of poverty, and protecting a legacy of conservation for future generations.

In addition to our anti-poaching unit, the Save Valley Conservancy has its own anti-poaching unit working tirelessly to protect our wildlife, working closely with the Anti-poaching Tracking Services (ATS) who specialise in rhino protection in our area, run rhino capture and notching programmes, and offer first response services to incidents.
